"On the third day of each new moon I must be free to do as I wish, and you must swear an oath on the body of the Boar whose flesh gave you sworn warriors that you will not attempt to see me or come near me on that day. Fear not, I will not leave the Castle nor try to escape you. This is my condition, and it cannot be altered.” — The Orphan’s Tales: In The Night Garden, Catherynne M. Valente

Dear Kids Shows,: A few things about Sailor Moon:

dearkidsshows:

  1. Saving the world with love and kindness is fine and good. Really. I like the idea of non-violence in children’s shows. HOWEVER, if you are writing a story, animating a story, or viewing a story about female “superheroes”, which, essentially is what the Sailor Scouts are, they should be portraying…

So basically, you’re saying if it’s not masculine, it’s not a skill? That it doesn’t take skill and courage to remain compassionate and determined no matter what, that it doesn’t take and iron will and determination to sacrifice your own life and energy against evil monsters? But if Sailor Moon was able to punch Queen Beryl to death with superstrength she inherently had, that would be a skill?

Saying that the schoolgirl uniform somehow means the Sailor Senshi aren’t threatening is saying that girls are inherently not threatening. Do you even realize this? Naoko Takeuchi said she made it a school uniform so that the young girls she was targeting with the story would relate to Usagi and her friends BECAUSE THEY WEAR THOSE UNIFORMS. And you’re saying they’re not allowed to feel they can be powerful in those uniforms? That it means they’re not powerful? You’re missing the entire point of Sailor Moon which was allowing a young girl to be powerful while being herself. She doesn’t need to look older or more masculine or reject what the average girl wears to kick ass. Of course she looks young, she is young. That doesn’t erase her power, that makes a statement that teenage girl can be powerful. I just find the whole argument really insulting.

It doesn’t matter what your intent was, saying these girls look white and calling it a Japanese thing was a eurocentric thing to say and lacked perspective. If you’re going to be a social justice resource, you need to own up when you mess up and learn for it. God knows I’ve made mistakes and had to publically own up to it plenty of times. But if you’d rather bury your head in the sand, you’re not going to be a good resource. I’d like you to be, and I’m sorry if my reblog got too much attention and made you feel overwhelmed- but I have a hard time believing your research was very good when you can’t even get the correct names for characters.
